The African Water Facility (AWF) provides grants and expert technical assistance to implement innovative water projects and raise investment for water projects throughout Africa. Hosted by the AfDB, the AWF was created by the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) in response to the need to catalyse the development of the water sector, by increasing the number and the quality of sustainable water projects to meet water development goals throughout the continent.

Today, the AWF has an established track record in helping design high quality and sustainable water projects and in attracting investment to finance the water sector and increase the implementation of projects. Target goals include increased water, food and energy security, and enhanced regional cooperation and socio-economic growth. Typically, AWF focuses on the three core areas that are complementary and synergetic: Project Preparation, Water Governance and Water Knowledge. The overall aim is to leverage all three of these areas to provide the framework and conditions necessary for sustainable projects to succeed and for the African water sector to thrive.
